Dazu Rock Carvings

Thousands of Buddhist, Taoist and Confucian figures carved into cliffs, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1999.

The carvings at Dazu date mainly from the 9th to the 13th century. The largest groups are at Baodingshan and Beishan, where scenes and figures are cut into the rock faces along a walking route.

Suggested itinerary

  1. MorningPrivate car from Chongqing, about two hours by road. Baodingshan first, while it's quieter.
  2. AfternoonLunch in Dazu, then Beishan if you'd like more, or back to Chongqing.

Good to know

The paths are mostly gentle, which makes this a good outing between appointments. A guide makes the carvings much easier to understand; we can arrange an English-speaking one.
