Winter gulls on Dianchi Lake
Every winter, flocks of black-headed gulls fly in from Siberia and spend the season in Kunming.
The first gulls reach Kunming in late October, most arrive in November, and they stay until about March. They gather over the water and along the shore, and people come out to watch them at sunrise and sunset.
Where to see them
- Haigeng Dam. A long, flat walkway on the northern shore of Dianchi Lake, with the Western Hills across the water.
- Green Lake Park. In the city centre, so it's easy to fit in before or after an appointment.

Good to know
Both spots are flat and easy to reach from the city centre, so this works well on a treatment day. Bring a light jacket: Kunming evenings are cool even when the days are warm.
